Lumbar Spine · Dr. Alexandre Journé

Degenerative lumbar scoliosis.

A lumbar spine deformity can appear in adulthood with the degeneration of the discs and vertebral joints.

The treatment decision is based on discomfort, spinal balance, and neurological symptoms, not solely on the angle of the scoliosis.

01 · Symptoms

Symptoms.

Lower back pain, fatigue when standing, or difficulty walking may occur. Associated narrowing of the spinal canal or foramina can cause pain and tingling in the legs.

02 · The assessment

The assessment.

Full spine X-rays, taken in the anteroposterior and lateral views while standing, assess the curvature and overall balance. MRI is used to look for nerve compression when indicated. Previous examinations help to assess the progression.

03 · The Treatments

Treatments.

Treatment is often non-surgical: rehabilitation, adapted activity, pain management, and sometimes injections. Follow-up is adjusted to the symptoms and progress.

04 · When to Discuss an Intervention?

When to discuss surgery?

Debilitating pain, significant imbalance, or neurological damage despite appropriate treatment may lead to a discussion about surgery. Depending on the case, it combines nerve release and stabilization by arthrodesis, with correction of the deformity. The extent of the procedure is individualized.

05 · Aftercare and Limitations

Post-operative care and limitations.

Recovery depends in particular on the procedure, the patient's general condition, and bone quality. Arthrodesis reduces the mobility of the fused segments. Infection, neurological complications, thrombosis, and fusion failure are among the risks discussed. Follow-up focuses on consolidation and a gradual return to activities.

When should I consult an emergency patient?

Recent loss of strength, numbness in the perineum, or new urinary or bowel control problems require urgent evaluation. Call 15 or the 112 : do not wait for a scheduled appointment.

Your questions.

Is it necessarily scoliosis present since childhood?+

No. Degenerative scoliosis can appear in adulthood. Longer-standing scoliosis can also progress with age; the assessment clarifies the context.

Does scoliosis require surgery?+

No. Functional impairment, progression, balance, and any potential nerve compression guide the discussion.

Can I get a second opinion?+

Yes. Bring your recent and previous imaging, reports, and the treatment proposal you received.
