Follow-up is adapted to the curvature, its progression, and remaining growth. Scoliosis can progress without causing pain.
When should I consult a doctor?
Shoulder or back asymmetry, a rib hump when bending forward, detected scoliosis, or a family history warrant a consultation. The consultation distinguishes between structural scoliosis and scoliotic posture.
The initial assessment
The clinical examination assesses the back and growth. Standing X-rays, prescribed depending on the context, allow measurement of the curvature. Bring previous examinations to assess its progression.
Follow-up during growth
Monitoring involves consultations and, when necessary, X-rays. The frequency of these consultations is individualized according to the risk of worsening and the rate of growth. Each check-up allows for a reassessment of the treatment strategy with the family.
The brace and rehabilitation
A brace may be recommended to limit the progression of scoliosis during growth. Its type and duration of use are prescribed individually. Follow-up focuses on correction, tolerance, adaptation to growth, and effective wear, in consultation with the orthotist/prosthetist. Rehabilitation may accompany treatment; it does not replace a brace when one is indicated.
When to discuss surgery?
Significant or progressive scoliosis may lead to consideration of surgery. The decision takes into account the deformity, growth, and impact, after explaining the alternatives, expected benefits, and risks.
After growth and after surgery
The end of growth leads to a reassessment of treatment and monitoring methods, without automatic cessation of follow-up. After surgery, check-ups and the return to school or sports are organized according to personalized instructions. The transition to adult follow-up is prepared when necessary.
Family questions
Should I wait until my back hurts?+
No. Scoliosis can be painless. Observed asymmetry or a positive screening result warrants further investigation.
How often should I return?+
The schedule is established during the consultation based on the curvature and growth. It is reassessed at each check-up.
What should I bring to the appointment?+
Previous images and reports, the child's health record, and, if the child wears one, their brace and information on its use.
