Understanding
The roots attach the ends of the meniscus to the tibia. Their rupture can compromise its ability to distribute loads and promote cartilage degeneration.
The Assessment
The examination and MRI look for a rupture and any possible extrusion of the meniscus. The condition of the cartilage and the limb's axis influence the treatment choice.
Treatments
Arthroscopic repair can re-anchor the nerve root to the bone, notably via a tibial tunnel. It is not suitable for all situations: advanced osteoarthritis, deformity, and the feasibility of rehabilitation are factors in the decision. Non-operative management may be considered.
Protecting the healing process
After repair, weight-bearing and flexion may be limited. The protocol differs from that of a simple meniscectomy. Healing is not guaranteed, and the development of osteoarthritis remains possible.
