Understanding
A hygroma is an inflammation of the bursa located between the skin and the kneecap. It can occur after repeated kneeling or trauma. Infection is also possible.
The Assessment
The examination differentiates this superficial pocket from an effusion within the joint. Redness, heat, a wound, or fever warrants investigation for infection; a biopsy may be necessary.
Treatments
For a non-infected form, protection against pressure and adjustments to activities may be sufficient. Aspiration is discussed depending on the context. An infection requires specific treatment, sometimes drainage. Troublesome chronic forms may require surgery.
Preventing Recurrence
Appropriate protective measures limit direct pressure. Do not puncture the pouch yourself.
