What is genu varum?
The knees remain apart when the ankles are brought together. In adults, this alignment can increase stress on the inner compartment of the knee. Its severity and tolerance vary.
Analyzing the entire lower limb
Examination and standing radiographs of the entire lower limbs allow measurement of the axis and localization of the deformity. The assessment takes into account pain, menisci, ligaments, and joint wear.
When should I correct my alignment?
Varus does not automatically lead to surgery. Managing the symptoms may be sufficient. In some situations, an osteotomy realigns the tibia, the femur, or both to redistribute stress. The choice depends on the origin of the deformity and the condition of the knee.
Waiting for consolidation
After an osteotomy, weight-bearing and activities follow the team's instructions and consolidation checks. Rehabilitation and exercises alone cannot correct an adult bone deformity.
Your questions.
Is the reasoning the same in children?+
No. Age and remaining growth modify the assessment and options. A pediatric pathway is offered starting at age 6.
